Submit Your Poems to Tule Review

I am one of the editors of The Tule Review, a publication of the Sacramento Poetry Center, which welcomes submissions for the next issue — now 40-50 pages and perfect bound — with an anticipated publication date in June 2010. We consider poetry of all styles and forms (except Haiku).

Submission Guidelines:

• Considers poetry of all styles and forms (except Haiku).
• Send up to six poems, maximum 96 lines per poem.
• Submission deadline for the June 2010 issue is Feb. 27, 2010; submissions received after that date may be considered for a future issue.
• Include name, street and e-mail addresses on each page of submission.
• Provide a short bio, not to exceed five lines.
• We prefer submission via email with poems attached in a single MSWord document (.doc or .docx format).
• E-mail submissions to tulereview@sacramentopoetrycenter.org Please specify "Tule Submission" in the subject line.
• Hard copy submissions are also accepted. Mail those to:

P.O. Box 160406
Sacramento, CA 95816.
• No simultaneous submissions. However, published poems are considered; please specify prior publication.
• Pays one contributor copy. Submission does not guarantee publication.
• We prefer to make notifications via email, but will do so via US mail if an SASE is provided. Submissions will not be returned.

Roland Mhasvi's Flowers

This is the cover of my copy of Roland Masvi's Flowers of Yesterday, a collection I reviewed in 1996 for The Herald. I was going through my old stuff when I saw this book in my old collection.  As I was flipping through the pages, I saw the cut-out for the original review, which in part reads: "This is a collection of highly esoteric poetry..., which can be charged of what Afrocentric scholars have described as 'piles of esoterica and ostentatious erudition'... The language is to the ordinary reader opaque, the imagery is inaccessible and the symbolism is surprisingly unusual but invitingly novel...real food for scholars."   The review just reminds me of the Chinweizu days, when we, as university students, had rediscovered African literature and its theory. Talking about Afrocentricity had a certain appeal, and we were looking at a lot of writing through the lenses of this newly-discovered Afrocentricity. Freedom The shackles have been cast off. Chains broken. People once squashed, under the jackboot of Apartheid, are free. Free at last! Freedom came on the 27th day in that April, 1994.
