      PRESENTS     James Arthur, Natalie Diaz, and Tomas Q. Morin   Monday, June 10 at 7:30 PM SPC at 1719 25th Street Host: Emmanuel Sigauke   James Arthur 's poems have appeared in The New Yorker , The New Republic , Poetry, and The American Poetry Review. He has received the Amy Lowell Travelling Poetry Scholarship, a Wallace Stegner Fellowship, an Amy Clampitt Residency, and a Discovery/ The Nation Prize. His first book, Charms against Lightning , is a poetic bildungsroman organized around the theme of awakening from a "ghost world" in order to journey toward a definition of selfhood. Romantic in spirit and contemporary in outlook, Arthur's poems are rhythmical, elastic, and expressive. During 2012-2013, Arthur will be a Hodder Fellow at the Lewis Center for the Arts in Princeton.   Presents   Phillip Larrea and Jan Haag   Monday, May 13, 2013 at 7:30 PM 1719 25th Street at SPC Host: Emmanuel Sigauke       Phillip Larrea is a syndicated columnist, and has been a widely published poet in the U.S., U.K. and Europe. Some of his favorite credits include Commonline Journal, The Rusty Nail , and Decades Review in the U.S., as well as Poetry Bus Magazine, Outburst, Nazar Look , and Silver Bow Anthology 2012 , internationally. Phillip studied poetry with Thom Gunn and Karl Shapiro at U.C. Davis, back in the day when tablets were made of stone. His chapbook, Our Patch (Writing Knights Press), was released January 2013. Christopher Mlalazi has done it again. He has just been offered  a creative writing residency at the University of Iowa called the INTERNATIONAL WRITING PROGAM (IWP).   Running from August to November 2012 annually, this program is the oldest and largest multinational residency in the world and has been in existence since 1967. Over 1400 writers from more than 130 nations have taken part in the residency.   The goal of the IWP is to provide authors the time to write, read, translate, study, conduct research, travel, give readings, and also be part of the vibrant literary and academic community of the University of Iowa, a major American research instituiton in Iowa city, the only American city designated as a UNESCO City of Literature.   Christopher Mlalazi is a published author wi...

Brad Henderson and Sharon Campbell Monday, December 12, 2011 at 7:30 PM 1719 25th Street Host: Emmanuel Sigauke Brad Henderson grew up as a city boy who summered on his granddad’s ranch in the Sacramento Valley foothills of California. He earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from California Polytechnic State College in San Luis Obispo, and his masters in creative writing (MPW) from University of Southern California. His recently completed a poetry book manuscript, The Secret Cowboy: the life & times of the rebel poet Beau Hamel , was named a semi-finalist for University of Arkansas Press’ 2011 Miller Williams Poetry Book Prize. He is also the author of two chapbook– Speed, Horse-sweat, & Unboxed Sky and Split Stock: Selected Poems (with Andy Jones). After receiving her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Michigan, she moved to California to become Professor of English and Writer-in-Residence at California State University, Sacramento (CSUS). She is married to Angus Wright, CSUS Emeritus Professor of Environmental Studies, with whom she frequently travels to Brazil. She received her MA from UC Davis and her PhD in English and Creative Writing from Western Michigan University. Bear Down, Bear North: Alaska Stories , her first book, won the 2010 Flannery O'Connor Award in Short Fiction. Her stories have appeared in Alaska Quarterly Review , Kenyon Review , Conjunctions, and elsewhere.
