Black History Month Poetry Features

I am hosting two events next week, featuring some of Sacramento's best poets, Sean Kinga, Laura Cook, Kelly Freeman, and Anna Marie Sprowl. ON Monday, February 11, all four poets will appear at the Sacramento Poetry Center at 7:30 PM. Then on Wednesday, February 13, Anna, Sean, and Laura will perform at Cosumnes River College in the Recital Hall, from 12:00 to 1:20 PM. Come experience these events, where you will hear from the best of Sac.

Anna Marie Sprowl is a native of Southern California and has been writing different forms of poetry since she was a child. Recently she has taken her talents to the stage and has moved many with her domestic and political pieces.  She has performed at the Crocker Art Museum, the Sacramento Poetry Center, Mahogany and The Guild Theatre among other venues.  Her poetry has also been accompanied by the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet and she is the reigning 2012 Love Jones Slam Champion.  Anna Marie currently resides in the Sacramento area with her three children.

Who is Sean King?

It’s simple; I am a husband, a father, a writer, a published author, a spoken word artist, a computer geek, a community activist, a dreamer, and someone who loves life.
During my life I’ve been fortunate to meet countless numbers of diverse people from all over the world and all walks of life. Performed on stages and in different venues across the country. Self published three books of poetry (Through My Eyes I, Through My Eyes II, and Hypnogysms) while simultaneously studying Computer Engineering. Conducted workshops ranging from finance to poetry. Co-authored and developed the first ever California Health Fact Book for the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD). Have been instrumental in creating and advising on-campus and community based organizations in the Sacramento area. Mentor to numerous youth in the Northern California area.. and pledged Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., the greatest fraternity in the world.
I’m 39 and would love to say I’ve accomplished my goals and caught a hold of my dreams. In reality, I am merely touching the tip of the iceberg and know there is much more to contribute. More people to uplift, more communities to turn around, more folks to touch right down to the core of their soul. To put it in perspective, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz (Malcolm X) were 39 when they were assassinated. By 39 both had already changed the world.
At 39, I’ve been fortunate to accomplish a few things. That being said, my vision for where I want “us” to be goes far beyond individual accomplishments.
I hope you’re ready to go to the moon, the tank in my spaceship is full and there’s one seat left for you.

Kelly Freeman is a Los Angeles native who began writing poetry at the age of 12. Her father was a poet and encouraged her to write and bought her first journal. She started performing on stage here in Sacramento ten years ago. She has also performed in Los Angeles, and the bay area. Kelly has been a featured artist at the Luna’s, The Guild Theater, Mahogany poetry series, Brown Sugar series, and the touring erotica show "The sweet spot". She was recently featured at the Shine cafe and Pepperbellys and looks forward to performing more in the future. She is currently writing a book, but has put printing on hold so that she can add some of the works of her father whom she recently lost. It has always been her dream to share his poetry with the world.

Laura Cook, one of the most versatile performance poets in Sacramento, is the eldest daughter to Cynthia Robinson of "Sly and the Family Stone". Laura is Sactown born, Oaktown raised by way of a few forgotten origins to MmaMmaAfrica, West Africa Likely. Her poetic tag "immoBme as.i.B.we" canopies much in her journey, as she is further sharin' shaklez in homage to the goodness of God.
