The Reading Process: Todd, Smith, Bulawayo, Manyika and Li

These are updates of what I have been reading, and writing--although now I value talking about reading more than I talk about my writing, because my writing should talk about itself, as it happens. I just came back from Winter Break. I had hoped to spend it in Zimbabwe, but then ended up being practical and decided not to go...these things cost a little bit of money, this traveling to Zimbabwe business. So I read and re-read. Judith Garfield Todd's 'Through the Darkness'. Thanks to Novuyo Rosa Tshuma who read it before I did (whereas I should have read it before she did, etc, something to do with my having "eaten" more Christmases than she has...to do with the fact that the book came out a long time ago and I should have noticed it earlier, but I hadn't, so as Novuyo was reading it, she was also posting some passages on Facebook, intriguing memoir moments... Thanks Novuyo, because that got me to look up this writer and I was able to order a copy from Ama...

An Excellent Opportunity for Sacramento Black Writers

Sacramento, California: The independent publisher, Blue Nile Press, will be holding its inaugural literary workshop in Sacramento on Saturday, January 26, in commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's Legacy. Presents Kelly Freeman, Kara Synhorst, David Iribarne Monday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 PM 1719 25th Street Host: Emmanuel Sigauke Kelly Freeman is a Los Angeles native who began writing poetry at the age of 12. Her father was a poet and encouraged her to write and bought her first journal. She started performing on stage here in Sacramento ten years ago. She has also performed in Los Angeles, and the bay area. Kelly has been a featured artist at the Luna’s, The Guild Theater, Mahogany poetry series, Brown Sugar series, and the touring erotica show "The sweet spot". She was recently featured at the Shine cafe and Pepperbellys and looks forward to performing more in the future. She is currently writing a book, but has put printing on hold so that she can add some of the works of her father whom she recently lost. Alejandro Escuda Wins SPC Book Contest 2012

The Sacramento Poetry Center has announced that Alejandro Escude's "My Earthbound Eye"  is the winner of its 2012 Manuscript Contest. The book will be published by the SPC Press. Alejandro Escude [ http://www.alejandroescude.com/ ] is a high school English teacher in Los Angeles and a graduate from the MA creative writing program at U.C. Davis. Previously, his work has been published in: Poet Lore, Rattle, Phoebe, California Quarterly, Blind Man’s Rainbow, Lucid Moon, Paris/Atlantic, Offerings, Möbius , and Tucumcari Literary Review . Before graduating from U.C. Davis, he won the 2003 University of California Poet Laureate contest. His work also appeared in in an anthology entitled How to Be This Man , published by Swan Scythe Press. His chapbook entitled Where Else But Here was published by March Street Press, December 2005.
