Special Mention for Zimbabwean Playwright in BBC 2010 African Performance Award


Myke Mwale, a Zimbabwean writer based in South Africa, has received a Special Mention (Commendation) in the 2010 BBC African Performance Award. The winning entries were selected by Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka, who announced that announced that Will Smith Look-alike, written by Deborah Asiimwe of Uganda, is the winner of the playwriting competition.

BBC World Service first began airing African drama 50 years ago, in 1960. In 1971, BBC World Service for Africa launched a playwriting competition, now known as African Performance, and invited its listeners to compose a 30-minute English-language play containing no more than six characters.

In an email message, Myke Mwale said, "I did not not win the prizes but the fact that the play got special mention is quite encouraging and I promise to write more. I am also delighted that the play will be aired on BBC radio and that only makes me smile."

I am delighted too that Mwale, a fellow Zim writer, has been honored this way, and I look forward to hearing more great news from him. He is one of the new generation of Zimbabwean writers who are taking the country's literature to new heights.

Roland Mhasvi's Flowers

This is the cover of my copy of Roland Masvi's Flowers of Yesterday, a collection I reviewed in 1996 for The Herald. I was going through my old stuff when I saw this book in my old collection.  As I was flipping through the pages, I saw the cut-out for the original review, which in part reads: "This is a collection of highly esoteric poetry..., which can be charged of what Afrocentric scholars have described as 'piles of esoterica and ostentatious erudition'... The language is to the ordinary reader opaque, the imagery is inaccessible and the symbolism is surprisingly unusual but invitingly novel...real food for scholars."   The review just reminds me of the Chinweizu days, when we, as university students, had rediscovered African literature and its theory. Talking about Afrocentricity had a certain appeal, and we were looking at a lot of writing through the lenses of this newly-discovered Afrocentricity.
